What Is Difficult About Coming Home?


This is an interesting question and one I’m often asked. From conversations with people who have done it and invariably found it more difficult than they had expected, I think it has a lot to do with expectations. When someone goes abroad they expect it to be different. They are often excited and prepare themselves by finding out as much as possible about the country they are going to.

In contrast, when people come home they expect it to be the same as they remember it. They are surprised when they don’t slot back in and feel at home straightaway. The excitement of homecoming often turns to disappointment.

Enforced Repatriations

The recent upheavals in Saudi Arabia made me think it would be topical to write about people who return to their home country because of some sudden, unforeseen event – anything that is forced on them by something other than their own free will. Other examples would be redundancy, failure of a business venture, or being returned earlier than expected by one’s employer. Another scenario causing an unplanned return is that of people who marry a foreign national, emigrate and then return after the failure of the marriage or death of the partner.
